FAST Celebrates Veterans Day

ROSWELL, GA – Students and staff at Fulton Academy of Science and Technology (FAST) celebrated Veterans Day by welcoming three veterans in the FAST community to share their experiences in the armed forces.  Air Force Major Richard Underwood, Army Sergeant First Class Donny Edwards, and Marine Corps Lance Corporal Jerry Godoy presented to FAST 3rd through 8th graders some of their powerful memories, why they joined the military, and why they chose to enlist in their particular branch.

Major Underwood is married to 5th-grade teacher Renee Underwood, who also has a son who is currently serving in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines; Sergeant Edwards is the father of FAST 6th grader, Idara, and has a son currently serving in the U.S. Army; and Lance Corporal Godoy’s daughter Sydney is a FAST 5th grader.

In addition to the assemblies, students in all grades learned about Veterans Day in their classrooms and wrote letters to veterans and active military personnel to thank them for their service and bravery.  The letters will be mailed to a variety of locations with packages sent through Operation Gratitude (www.operationgratitude.com).

“FAST has a responsibility to teach its students the meaning of Veterans Day and the importance of military service to our country.  We are proud of all the active and retired military personnel with ties to our community and are pleased to celebrate them today,” said Mr. Stan Beiner, principal of FAST.

At 11:11 am, everyone at FAST also stood for a moment of respect four our veterans and the Battle Hymn of the Republic was played over the school’s PA system.  The school honored 52 student and staff sibling, parent, and grandparent veterans or active servicepeople in total on their main office entry display monitor throughout the day.
